Self aligning torque and the Gough plot
The charts below show the self aligning properties of the tyre.
Tyre testing is normally carried out with zero geometric trail, zero castor angle and zero kingpin angle. The Self Aligning Torque plots therefore only show the effect of pneumatic trail. In the chart below this characteristic is plotted against lateral force. This representation is known as the "Gough" plot. It is not often used but illustrates quite well the connection between S.A.T. and lateral force. The trend here shows the sensitivity to slip angle. Note that the peak is reached before maximum lateral force is achieved. It is often considered that the loss of “feel” just beyond the S.A.T. peak is an indication to the driver that he is now cornering on the limit. For the racing driver this is not the case, he must operate in the region past the peak. The designer can amplify or attenuate this feedback effect by adjusting the steering geometry parameters.
